A study published on 29 June 2026 in the European Journal of Nutrition, based on data from 167,142 UK Biobank participants, shows a link between moderate consumption of unsweetened coffee and a lower risk of cardiovascular disease. Researchers followed participants for a median of 11.1 years, during which 14,395 of them developed a cardiovascular condition.
People who drank between two and three daily „units” of unsweetened coffee had a 19% lower risk of developing cardiovascular disease compared with non-consumers — a U-shaped curve, with the lowest risk at moderate intake. Sweetened coffee, on the other hand, did not show the same protective association, suggesting that added sugar may cancel out the cardiovascular benefits of caffeine and other coffee compounds.
