On 9 October, Sotheby’s held an auction on the grounds of The Macallan distillery in Speyside, Scotland, for the first time, to mark 100 years since the legendary 1926 whisky was distilled. The star of the evening was a bottle of The Macallan 1926 with the Fine & Rare label, sold for £2,125,000, about $2.8 million.
It is the second most expensive bottle of whisky ever sold in pounds sterling. The whisky was distilled in 1926 and bottled in 1986, after 60 years of maturation in a single sherry cask, number 263, which yielded only 40 bottles. It is the oldest expression Macallan has ever bottled.
The auction comprised 42 lots, mostly from private collections, and every lot sold, for a total of £3.3 million, above the £2.4-3.2 million estimate. A complete set of The Macallan in Lalique Six Pillars Collection fetched £350,000, while the Romantica collection, offered by the distillery, raised £162,500 for charity.
Macallan is not currently part of the shop’s range, but you can discover the selection of whisky and spirits at Mister Tabaco.
