Jura distillery, on the Scottish island of the same name, has launched a new range of sherry cask-finished single malts, opening with two expressions. Both were first matured in American ex-bourbon casks, then fully finished in casks that held fortified wines from Jerez.
Jura 12 Year Old Oloroso Edition is finished in American and European oak casks that held Oloroso sherry, and the official description mentions prunes, caramelised walnut and candied citrus. Jura 15 Year Old Manzanilla Edition uses Manzanilla casks, a dry sherry from the coast, with notes of citrus peel, almond and fresh bread. Master blender Joe Ricketts recommends pairing the 15-year-old with oysters.
Both are bottled at 46%, with no added colouring and no chill filtration. Suggested prices are £50 for the 12-year-old and £65 for the 15-year-old, and the bottles are already available in the UK and mainland Europe. The range is inspired by the Spanish custom of “sobremesa”, the relaxed conversation after a meal.
