The 2026 National Coffee Data Trends report, published by the Specialty Coffee Association, confirms that specialty coffee consumption has hit a record high in the United States. 47% of American adults drank specialty coffee the day before the survey, surpassing traditional coffee consumption at 42% for the first time. Overall, two-thirds of Americans drank coffee that day, more than any other beverage.
Growth is being driven largely by younger consumers: among adults aged 25-39, 69% drank specialty coffee in the past week — the highest share across all age groups, a strong signal for the industry’s momentum in the years ahead.
Out-of-home consumption is also rising: 36% of specialty coffee drinkers bought their beverage prepared elsewhere, compared to just 23% of traditional coffee drinkers. On flavor, 76% lean toward hot drinks, though cold coffee remains popular at 60%, with chocolate, caramel, brown sugar and vanilla among the favorite notes.
