The centerpiece is a set of six loose-leaf tea tins priced at $29, with the tins also sold individually at $6. An AI defect detector gets much more accurate when it flips the coffee beans

A team of researchers in Mexico, from the Technological Institute of Orizaba and the Autonomous University of the State of Mexico, has presented in the journal Agriculture a prototype that automatically identifies defects in green coffee beans using artificial intelligence.

The device takes 350-gram samples, photographs small groups of beans with two 16-megapixel cameras under controlled LED lighting, then mechanically flips them 180 degrees and photographs the other side. Analyzing both sides improved defect detection by 25.7% compared with photographing only one side.

The system was trained on 9,600 images covering 11 defect types (black, sour, broken, “elephant” beans and others) plus normal beans. Of the four neural networks tested, YOLOv8 performed best, with 97.4% precision and 99.6% recall. The authors note, however, that one sample takes 38 to 40 minutes, so the prototype is not yet an industrial sorter.

The Dalmore 102 Proof: a 12-year-old single malt bottled at 51%

Whisky Dalmore Quintet 0.7L

Scottish distillery The Dalmore has announced The Dalmore 102 Proof Aged 12 Years, a limited-edition Highland single malt bottled at 51% ABV, hence the name. It is not a stronger version of the classic 40% Dalmore 12, but a new recipe.

The whisky spent ten years in American white oak ex-bourbon barrels and was then split between Oloroso casks and casks made exclusively for The Dalmore by González Byass, which had held a blend of Oloroso and Pedro Ximénez. The official notes mention candied citrus, raisins, orange marmalade, dark chocolate and freshly roasted coffee.

The edition will be available from November 2, exclusively on The Dalmore’s website, at a suggested price of £90; members of The Dalmore Guild get early access.

At Mister Tabaco you can find The Dalmore Quintet, and the full drinks range is in the Alcohol category.

CAO Flathead American Muscle combines two famous lines in a cigar for TAA members

Scandinavian Tobacco Group is preparing CAO Flathead American Muscle for November, a limited edition that merges two of CAO’s best-known lines: America, launched nearly 20 years ago, and Flathead, introduced in 2013 and inspired by hot-rod car culture.

The cigar takes the striped look of CAO America, created with two intertwined Connecticut wrappers, a dark broadleaf and a light shade, and the square, box-pressed shape of Flathead. The binder is Brazilian, while the filler combines tobaccos from the Dominican Republic, Nicaragua, the United States and Italy.

There is a single size, 6 inches with a 60 ring gauge, in boxes of 12, at a suggested price of $12.99 per cigar. The cigars are made at STG’s factory in Estelí, Nicaragua, and are reserved for member retailers of the Tobacconists’ Association of America (TAA).

This edition is not in our catalog, but you can explore the cigar selection at Mister Tabaco.

Trabucuri Quai D’Orsay Coronas Claro 25

Quai d’Orsay was created in 1974 as a regional brand for France and Switzerland and is known for its elegant, medium-strength profile.

Momo Kombucha launches a seasonal kombucha with passion fruit from Seville, together with Natoora

Momo Kombucha, a small brewery in London’s Brixton run by husband-and-wife Josh and Lisa Puddle, has launched Amadora’s Passion Fruit Kombucha, a seasonal drink made in collaboration with fresh-produce supplier Natoora.

Kombucha is tea fermented with a living culture of bacteria and yeast. For the new flavour, Momo uses organic passion fruit grown in Mairena del Alcor, near Seville, by farmer Amadora. The fruit is not picked early but left to fall into nets on its own so it fully ripens, making it sweeter and more aromatic. The fruit has only two short harvest windows a year.

The drink is Soil Association certified organic and costs £4.50 per 330ml bottle. It is available at Natoora, GAIL’s Bakery, Selfridges, Planet Organic and Whole Foods Market, and part of the sales goes to a fund supporting young farmers.

Tufts study: calories in Americans’ coffee rose 40% in 15 years, driven by nondairy creamers

A study by researchers at Tufts University, published on October 19 in the Journal of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, shows that coffee drinks consumed by US adults have become more caloric, even though the amount of coffee has stayed the same.

The team analyzed federal NHANES survey data for 30,459 adults from 2003 to 2018. Consumption stayed around 13 ounces a day, but calories from coffee drinks rose on average from 43 to 60 a day, an increase of about 40%.

The main driver is nondairy creamer, which contributed about 19 calories a day in 2018, compared with about 8 in 2003, overtaking both sugar and dairy milk. The authors note that the study did not track health outcomes, relies on self-reported data and ends in 2018.

SMWS launches its first blended Scotch: Heresy “The Blender’s Notebook”, aged 18 years

The Scotch Malt Whisky Society (SMWS), known for its single cask bottlings, has launched the first blended Scotch in its history: Heresy Batch 44 “The Blender’s Notebook”, an 18-year-old whisky.

The blend contains about 70% malt whisky, with sherry casks predominating. Its components include the base of a long-discontinued blend, kept for about 20 years in a sherry butt, a 27-year-old grain whisky and malts of about 18 years matured in bourbon, Pedro Ximénez and Oloroso casks. The label imitates vintage blended Scotch labels.

The edition numbers 1,092 bottles at £80 and is sold on the Society’s website to SMWS members, which anyone can join. The idea came from outgoing whisky director Kai Ivalo, who wanted a high-malt blend with old-school character.

The product is not in our catalog, but you can discover the whisky selection at Mister Tabaco.

Saltire Rare Malt launches Cigar Malt Edition 2: a 15-year-old Inchgower made for cigars

Saltire Rare Malt, an independent Scotch whisky bottler based in Falkland, Fife, has launched Cigar Malt Edition 2, the second whisky in a series designed specifically to accompany a cigar.

It is a 15-year-old single malt from a single cask, distilled at Inchgower, a Speyside distillery near Buckie whose output mostly goes into blends, which makes single cask bottlings from it rare. The cask was selected by whisky experts Hans and Becky Offringa. The whisky is bottled at 48.8% ABV, and the edition numbers 298 bottles at £120, sold online by the bottler.

The official notes mention marmalade, stewed red apples, cherry tobacco, cloves, honeycomb and leather. The first Cigar Malt, an 18-year-old from Speyside Distillers, sold out quickly.

This whisky is not in our catalog, but you can discover the whisky selection at Mister Tabaco and cigars that suit such a glass.

J.C. Newman launches Brick House Beginnings Ciento Por Ciento, a Nicaraguan puro aged five years

American company J.C. Newman Cigar Co. has announced a new edition of the Brick House Ciento Por Ciento, the first released under the Brick House Beginnings banner, an occasional series of extra-aged cigars.

Unlike the regular Brick House, which uses an Ecuadorian wrapper grown from Cuban seed, this version is a Nicaraguan puro: wrapper, binder and filler all come from Nicaragua. The cigars were rolled at the PENSA factory in Estelí and then spent five years in the company’s aging rooms.

There is a single size, 6 1/4 x 54, sold in boxes of 10 at $12 per cigar. Production is limited to 800 boxes, and the release was announced at the Tobacconists’ Association of America (TAA) trade show in La Romana, Dominican Republic, reserved for member retailers. Previous Ciento Por Ciento editions came out in 2019, 2020 and 2023.

Brick House is not in our catalog, but you can explore the cigar selection at Mister Tabaco.
