University of Hawaii to Lead a New US Research Lab for Coffee and Cacao

The University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa will lead the Feed the Future Innovation Lab for Coffee and Cacao, a new research program funded by the US Department of State and announced on October 15 alongside seven other innovation labs. Clemson University will serve as co-director, and initial funding is $8 million for the first year, under an agreement that can run up to five years.

This is not a single building but a research network active in coffee- and cacao-producing regions across the US, Latin America, Africa and Asia. Its goals include breeding disease- and drought-resistant varieties, improving farm management and post-harvest processing, and economic studies showing where agricultural research has the greatest impact.

Partners include World Coffee Research, the Coffee Quality Institute, UC Davis, Michigan State, Ohio State and Penn State universities, as well as the company Mars. Specific projects and sites have not yet been announced.
