The Specialty Coffee Association has announced a one-million-dollar gift to the University of California, Davis, creating a permanent fellowship dedicated to coffee research. The money is structured as an endowment: about 4% of the fund, roughly $40,000, will be distributed each year to support a graduate-level researcher.

Fellows will be able to work across engineering, chemistry, sensory science, agriculture, roasting, brewing and post-harvest processing. The UC Davis Coffee Center was founded in 2014 and in 2024 opened a dedicated research and teaching building, with laboratories for brewing, sensory evaluation, green coffee storage and chemical analysis, plus a pilot roastery.

The two organisations have worked together since 2017, when they launched the centre’s first major project on the fundamentals of brewing. The Specialty Coffee Association (SCA), the leading global body for specialty coffee, has presented its slate of candidates for the board of directors election for the 2027-2029 term. Jon Allen, co-founder and chief executive of US roaster Onyx Coffee Lab, has been named for the position of Second Vice President of the association.

Other candidates put forward for the board include Ahmed Bin Sulayem (DMCC), Sunalini N. Menon (Coffeelab Limited of India) and Karsten Ranitzsch (Nespresso). The SCA board sets the strategic direction of the organisation, which runs standards, competitions and training programmes for coffee professionals worldwide.

Onyx Coffee Lab, based in Arkansas, is one of the most awarded US roasters of recent years and was recently nominated for the James Beard Awards.

The Specialty Coffee Association has announced the winners of the 2026 Best New Product competition, held at the World of Coffee San Diego trade show — one of the specialty coffee industry’s most important global events.

The awards recognized innovation across several categories: in accessories, and also winning the People’s Choice vote, was the Satellite Coffee Guard by Squeaky; in consumer coffee preparation and serving, the award went to the VS4 by Varia; the commercial preparation and serving category was won by the mobile OnePress Café system, developed by Solrisen; and in specialty coffee consumables, the trophy went to APAX LAB KONFLUX by Slow Pour Supply.

The event also included the Coffee Design Awards, which separately recognized packaging and café space design. This year’s edition drew record attendance, confirming the industry’s growing appetite for equipment and accessories built for premium coffee.
