Accessory maker Siglo Accessory has unveiled a new cigar ashtray inspired by kintsugi, the Japanese technique of repairing broken ceramics with lacquer mixed with powdered gold. The philosophy behind this art is that cracks are part of an object’s history and should be highlighted rather than hidden.
The ashtray was not actually broken and glued back together. It is made of bone china, and the “cracks” are hand-applied gold decals that recreate the shining veins typical of kintsugi pottery. The result is an object that combines the function of a cigar ashtray with a decorative, Asian-inspired element.
According to Cigar Aficionado, the price is 1,300 Hong Kong dollars, roughly 165 US dollars. The publication has not yet specified a release date or distribution channels.
