Stumptown Coffee Roasters, one of the brands that defined American specialty coffee, is preparing to open a new flagship café in Los Angeles. The location is in the Lincoln Heights neighbourhood, on North Broadway, inside the historic former Starland Theatre building.
The space will combine a café with a regional training centre for baristas. The fit-out preserves the old theatre’s relief façade and the original terrazzo flooring. It is an example of adaptive reuse of a historic building, and the company says the new location marks Stumptown’s return to Los Angeles proper.
Stumptown opened its first café in Portland in 1999 and designs each location to reflect its neighbourhood. Julianne Pike, director of retail, says the company has wanted its cafés to be more than places for good coffee from the very beginning. The exact opening date has not yet been announced.
