The US magazine Roast, a leading publication for the coffee roasting industry, has announced the finalists of the 23rd Roaster of the Year awards. The competition has two categories based on volume: micro roasters, below 100,000 pounds (about 45 tonnes) of coffee a year, and macro roasters, above that threshold.
The micro category has four finalists after a tie in the first round of judging: Chocolate Fish Coffee Roasters (Sacramento, California), Dessert Oasis Coffee Roasters (Ferndale, Michigan), Idle Hands Roasting Co. (Salt Lake City, Utah) and Indie Coffee Roasters (Carmel, Indiana). The macro category features Corvus Coffee Roasters (Denver), Dean’s Beans Organic Coffee (Orange, Massachusetts) and Utopian Coffee (Fort Wayne, Indiana), the largest of them at almost 450 tonnes a year.
The judges assess coffee quality as well as sustainability, staff and community education, industry involvement and diversity. The winners will be announced on 19 October and featured in the magazine’s November-December issue.
