The team behind New Era Whiskey, a Lexington, Kentucky distillery known for single-barrel, cask-strength bourbons, has launched Marquee, a new small-batch series whose recipe is set not by the master distiller but by a group of guests.
For the first edition, nine specialists – including journalist Maggie Kimberl of American Whiskey Magazine, bourbon podcast hosts, representatives of Kentucky bourbon clubs and a bartender – tasted 30 barrels aged 5 to 9 years. Split into three teams, they each proposed a blend, and the winning version was chosen by vote. The result combines 11 barrels from seven different mash bills.
The 750 ml bottle costs $49.99 and is sold at the distillery and online, with select Kentucky retailers to follow. For future editions, the company wants to invite tasters from other parts of the US.
New Era is not part of our range, but you can explore the selection of whisky and bourbon at Mister Tabaco.
