Nikka Whisky is launching Frontier in the UK this month, a permanent lightly peated expression conceived as a tribute to founder Masataka Taketsuru. The whisky contains 51% malt whisky, with a focus on heavily peated malts from the Yoichi distillery in Hokkaido, founded by Taketsuru in 1934 and one of the few in the world still using direct coal-fired pot stills.
Frontier is bottled at 48% ABV, non-chill filtered, in 500 ml bottles. The front carries a large “N” taken from the company logo, and the back a shimenawa motif, the sacred rice-straw rope Nikka hangs above its stills, a nod to the Taketsuru family’s roots in sake brewing. The announced profile combines a rich malty aroma with pleasant smoke and peaty notes, suited to highballs and simple cocktails.
The suggested price is £33, and the whisky is sold exclusively in Majestic stores and on the retailer’s website.
Mister Tabaco already carries Nikka Days Japanese Blended, another expression from the house; also explore the full whisky selection.
