1 October Marked for the First Time as an Officially UN-Recognised International Coffee Day

International Coffee Day, celebrated on 1 October, was marked this year for the first time as an official United Nations day. The UN General Assembly adopted resolution 80/248 on 10 March 2026, with 150 votes in favour, one against – the United States – and one abstention, from Canada.

The resolution recognises that coffee provides economic benefits at every stage of the global value chain and encourages governments and industry to promote sustainable production, support for smallholder farmers and a fairer distribution of value. According to Daily Coffee News, the US vote reflected a general stance on UN cooperation rather than anything coffee-related; the US withdrew from the International Coffee Organization back in 2018.

The 1 October date was originally set by the International Coffee Organization in 2014, with the first edition held in 2015. The FAO endorsed it in July 2025, ahead of this year’s official recognition.
