Starbucks Sued Over “Sugar-Free” Protein Drinks That Contain Milk Sugar

Three consumers from California, New York and Washington filed a class action against Starbucks on 2 October in federal court in Seattle. The complaint targets eight drinks from the protein range launched in September 2025, including the Sugar-Free Vanilla Protein Latte and the Sugar-Free Caramel Protein Matcha, in hot and iced versions.

The plaintiffs claim a venti serving contains between 13 and 21 grams of sugar, mainly from lactose in the milk. According to them, US federal labelling rules allow a “sugar-free” claim only below 0.5 grams per serving, and it cannot be equated with “no added sugar”. The complaint also cites missing mandatory calorie disclaimers and requests a jury trial.

Starbucks said the lawsuit “has no merit” and that it will defend itself vigorously, stressing that nutritional information is published transparently across all its channels.

Starbucks closes around 250 North American cafés and speeds up remodels

Starbucks will close approximately 250 cafés in North America, about 2.2% of its 11,149 company-operated locations in the region. California appears hardest hit, with 64 units identified as likely closures. It is the second such round under CEO Brian Niccol, following the wave announced in September 2025.

At the same time, the company is pressing ahead with store upgrades under its “Back to Starbucks” strategy: more than 1,000 US and Canadian cafés have been redesigned since late 2025, with a target of at least 1,500 by the end of fiscal 2026. Remodels are now expanding to cities including Atlanta, Miami, Seattle, Toronto and Vancouver.

Employees at closing stores are being offered transfers to nearby locations where possible, or severance support. The move comes amid growing competition from chains such as Dutch Bros, 7 Brew and Luckin Coffee.

Starbucks and Nestlé bring Refreshers concentrates into consumers’ homes

Nestlé and Starbucks have announced the expansion of their retail partnership into a new category: Starbucks Refreshers Concentrates, concentrates for making at home the refreshing drinks that have become a pillar of the chain’s coffeehouse menu. The product is based on green coffee extract, which supplies the caffeine, and comes in three flavours — Strawberry Açaí, Mango Dragonfruit and Lime Watermelon — to be mixed with water, milk or lemonade over ice.

The results of the initial US launch exceeded both companies’ expectations: stock sold out on Amazon after a single day and in more than 1,000 Target stores within three days. According to Starbucks, Refreshers are now the second-best-selling beverage platform in its coffeehouses, behind espresso-based drinks, and a major driver of category growth.

The launch is part of the Global Coffee Alliance, the partnership formed in 2018 between Nestlé and Starbucks that combines the Swiss group’s global distribution network and manufacturing capabilities with the American brand’s recognition. Trade media value the Refreshers platform at roughly $2 billion.

Unicorn Frappuccino Returns to Starbucks and Breaks a Sales Record

Starbucks brought back its famous Unicorn Frappuccino, first launched in 2017, for a single weekend from 15 to 17 August 2026. The Seattle company used the original recipe — a sweet-and-tart blend of creamy mango flavours, a tangy blue drizzle, whipped cream and a pink-and-blue topping that shifts colour as the drink is stirred.

The result: more than 2 million drinks sold across its company-operated North American cafés in a single weekend, with 15 August becoming the company’s best Saturday sales day ever in the region. The beverage was also offered in selected markets across Latin America, Europe, the Middle East and Asia Pacific. The return underlines how powerful nostalgia remains as a marketing tool in the coffee business.
