Indian whisky and Scotch join forces: IMWA and the Scotch Whisky Association sign a cooperation pact

The Indian Malt Whisky Association (IMWA) and the Scotch Whisky Association (SWA) have signed a cooperation agreement in New Delhi, witnessed by Scotland’s First Minister, John Swinney. It was signed by IMWA director general Major General (retd.) Rajesh Chopra and SWA international director Ian Duddy.

The two bodies will share information and good practice on sustainability, protecting and promoting the category, regulation, product authenticity, fighting intellectual property infringements and responsible consumption.

The pact follows the India–UK trade agreement, in force since July 15, 2026, under which India’s tariff on Scotch falls from 150% to 75%, and then to 40% over ten years. In 2025, Scotch exports to India were worth £286 million. The IMWA, launched in March 2025, brings together producers such as Amrut, John Distilleries, Radico Khaitan, Piccadilly Agro and Diageo India, and this year introduced a certification hologram for Indian single malts.
