At this year’s InterTabac fair in Dortmund, Nicaraguan manufacturer Plasencia put on display the next entry in its Chinese zodiac series: El Año de la Cabra, the Year of the Goat. It is a large perfecto measuring roughly 6 1/4 inches with a 60 ring gauge, a shape that has become a constant of this annual collection.

Company representatives indicated that a formal announcement, with full blend and pricing details, will follow shortly. Based on the numbering visible on the boxes shown at the fair, the run is expected to be 6,000 boxes of ten cigars — a production figure comparable to earlier editions in the series.

Plasencia Cigars announced “Born of This Land” on 4 September, a brand campaign marking 160 years since the family began growing tobacco in 1865.

The campaign arrives together with a new logo and redesigned packaging, but the emphasis falls on the people behind production. Field supervisors, agricultural engineers, crew leaders, fermentation specialists, quality control staff and master rollers will be featured by name and role. The materials will run across print, digital, retail and experiential channels.

The central message is an expanded idea of terroir: not just soil and climate, but the relationship between those, the people, and generations of accumulated knowledge. Néstor Andrés Plasencia said the initiative “honors the people, the knowledge, and the land” that make the company’s work possible.

Nicaraguan manufacturer Plasencia Cigars has unveiled Triunfal, a cigar that marks a first for the company: it is their first product made entirely from certified organic tobacco grown in both Honduras and Nicaragua. The wrapper comes from Finca La Tradición in Honduras’ Jamastrán Valley, the binder is grown at Finca San Agustín in Olancho, Honduras, and the filler blends leaves from that same Honduran farm with tobacco from the Jalapa region of Nicaragua.

The production story is as unusual as the recipe itself: the entire run of 50,000 cigars was hand-rolled by a single pair of craftsmen — one roller and one buncher — without involving any other factory workers. Plasencia is one of the oldest and most respected families in the cigar industry, with plantations spanning both sides of the Honduras-Nicaragua border.
