Indian company Kruti Coffee, one of the first specialty coffee brands from the state of Odisha, has shipped from Kolkata the first Indian coffee consignment to the UK exempt from customs duty, under the new CETA trade agreement between India and the United Kingdom. The shipment coincides with the August 1 opening of the brand’s first international café, in London.
Co-founder Jeeta Mona presented officials at India House with a symbolic tin of Kruti coffee to mark the occasion. The coffee comes from the Koraput region of Odisha, where Kruti is the first entity developing specialty coffee roasts from locally grown beans.
The recently enacted CETA agreement removes customs duties on a range of products between the two countries, opening the door for more small Indian exporters to reach the UK market — a sign of the accelerating internationalization of India’s specialty coffee scene.
