The European Union has formally approved, on its own behalf, the International Coffee Agreement 2022, replacing the older 2007 agreement. The new text updates the International Coffee Organization’s (ICO) voting and contribution system and, for the first time, brings the private sector and civil society into the organization’s work.
The new agreement was originally adopted back in 2022 by the International Coffee Council, but the ratification and formal accession process for member states continued into this month, when the EU finalized its approval.
The move is seen as an important step for the long-term stability of the global coffee market, at a time when worldwide production, exports and consumption are, according to recent estimates, hitting record levels.
