“Raise Your Cup” Campaign Puts the Spotlight on Women Coffee and Cacao Farmers

The organisation Equal Origins and the agency Kindred Sparks have launched “Raise Your Cup”, an awareness campaign dedicated to women who grow coffee and cacao. The campaign started on 1 October, International Coffee Day, and ends on 15 October, the International Day of Rural Women.

For 15 days the organisers are publishing one story a day about women farmers and their work, which often goes unseen in the supply chain. The campaign’s message comes down to three verbs: recognise, uplift and invest. Equal Origins founder Kimberly Easson summed up the idea: “All coffee is women’s coffee.”

The fundraising target is at least $15,000, split between partner organisations in Colombia and Honduras at roughly $5,000 each. The initiative is backed by a coalition of coffee and cocoa companies including Peet’s Coffee, Stumptown Coffee, Allegro Coffee and Guittard Chocolate. The organisers cite estimates that closing the gender gap in agrifood systems could add nearly $1 trillion to the global economy.
