Bowmore Captivo Sherry Cask Pursuit: a 20-year-old single malt exclusive to travel retail

The Bowmore distillery on Islay, founded in 1779 and owned by Suntory Global Spirits, has unveiled Captivo Sherry Cask Pursuit, a 20-year-old single malt made exclusively for travel retail (airport and duty-free shops).

The whisky was matured in Spanish oak casks that previously held Oloroso sherry and in American ex-bourbon casks, then finished in Oloroso hogsheads. It is bottled at 51.8% ABV with a recommended price of $380. The official notes mention tropical fruit, black pepper, smoked toffee and a finish of sweet peat smoke.

The packaging was designed by Alex Mustonen, co-founder of the design studio Snarkitecture, in his first whisky project. The rollout starts in November 2026 in China, India and South Korea, with wider distribution from January 2027. The Captivo Collection also includes a second 20-year-old, Oak Voyage, intended for domestic markets.

Bowmore is not in our catalog, but you can explore the whisky and spirits selection at Mister Tabaco.

Bowmore Brings Back The Devil’s Casks, With a 10-Year-Old and a Never-Seen 22-Year-Old

Bowmore, the oldest licensed distillery on Islay (founded in 1779), is bringing back The Devil’s Casks, a trilogy released between 2013 and 2015 and prized for the darker, richer style its sherry casks delivered. The name comes from a local legend: the devil is said to have escaped Bowmore’s round church by hiding in a whisky cask.

The first release is a 10-year-old matured in first-fill Oloroso casks and finished in Pedro Ximénez, at 56.6%, priced at £70. The second is a never-before-seen 22-year-old, drawn from two casks held back from the original editions and matured for another decade, bottled at 59.6% and priced at £380.

Both are global exclusives of The Whisky Shop: the 10-year-old arrives on 16 October, while the 22-year-old is sold by ballot from 31 October. Bowmore says it will revive other editions from its archive too.

Bowmore Named World’s Best Single Malt at the World Whiskies Awards 2026

At the 2026 edition of the World Whiskies Awards, one of the most respected international whisky competitions, the editors of Whisky Magazine named Bowmore 21 Year Old Sherry Oak Cask the “World’s Best Single Malt.” The honor confirms the standing of the Scottish distillery, one of the oldest on Islay, among the benchmarks of the super-premium category.

Alongside Bowmore, the Ballantine’s brand also picked up a “World’s Best” title in the blended segment, reinforcing the reputation of the established Scotch houses. This year’s edition brought some surprises too: younger distilleries from whisky’s “new frontiers” — Australia, Belgium and China — climbed onto the podium next to traditional names, a sign that the global map of quality whisky is expanding fast.

The judging panel also handed out honorary titles: critic Serge Valentin (Whisky Fun) and former Nikka master blender Tadashi Sakuma were inducted into the Whisky Magazine Hall of Fame.
