Study: heavy coffee drinkers have less body fat and more muscle mass

A study published in the European Journal of Nutrition by researchers at the University of Oulu (Finland), together with Imperial College London and other institutions, examined the link between habitual coffee consumption and body composition.

It used data from 2,264 participants in the Northern Finland Birth Cohort 1966, clinically examined at age 46. People drinking at least five cups a day had, despite a similar body mass index, less body fat and more muscle mass than low consumers. In men, high intake was associated with better insulin sensitivity but also somewhat higher LDL cholesterol; differences in hormone levels were observed in both sexes.

The authors stress that this is an observational study showing associations, not cause and effect — so it is not a recommendation to drink more coffee.
