The Scotch Malt Whisky Society (SMWS) released two 35cl bottles on September 10 to mark Whisky Equinox, an initiative through which the Edinburgh-based society wants to turn the autumn equinox — September 23 at 01:06 — into the official start of the “whisky season”.
The two expressions carry the playful names typical of SMWS: “Riesling Spritz in the Sun”, a 12-year-old Speyside, and “Spice It Up After Dark”, an 11-year-old Highland. Each half-bottle costs £39 (around $52), and the pair £75. The novelty is that both can also be bought by people who are not members of the society, something rarely seen at SMWS, which usually reserves its bottlings for members.
The launch will be celebrated on September 23 at the Members’ Room on Queen Street, Edinburgh, with a guided tasting, and a second session takes place on October 15. By the end of the year, SMWS promises around 100 limited editions, with an emphasis on peated and sherry-cask whiskies.
