US magazine Roast announced the winners of its 23rd Roaster of the Year awards on 19 October, a week after presenting the finalists. The judges assess coffee quality, sustainability, staff and community education, as well as diversity and inclusion.
In the Micro category (under 100,000 pounds of coffee per year), the title went to Dessert Oasis Coffee Roasters of Michigan. Founded in 2009, the company roasts about 31 tonnes a year at its Ferndale headquarters, runs four cafés in the Detroit area and a dedicated education department, and makes deliveries with electric vehicles.
The Macro category was won by Utopian Coffee of Fort Wayne, Indiana, founded in 2006 by cousins Brendon Maxwell and Patrick Smith. The roaster processes around 450 tonnes a year and has bought more than one million pounds of Regenerative Organic Certified coffee.
The finalists included Chocolate Fish, Idle Hands, Indie Coffee Roasters, Corvus Coffee and Dean’s Beans.
