Anantara to Open a Retreat on a Darjeeling Tea Estate

Hotel group Minor Hotels has signed an agreement to manage Anantara Retreat Darjeeling Hills, the first Anantara Retreats property in India. It will be built within the Tindharia tea estate in West Bengal, about 40 kilometres from the town of Darjeeling, and is slated to open in 2031.

The 849-acre estate, which sits at elevations between 450 and 1,000 metres, will keep operating as a working tea plantation. The tea factory and gardens will anchor the guest experience, in a region whose tea is often called “the Champagne of teas”.

The property will have 70 keys (35 suites and 35 tented villas set along the slope), a spa, a pool overlooking the plantation and a 750 sqm event space. The project is being developed with JK Urbana Garden, and Indian media put the investment at around 110 crore rupees (roughly 1.1 billion rupees).
