Bowmore, the oldest licensed distillery on Islay (founded in 1779), is bringing back The Devil’s Casks, a trilogy released between 2013 and 2015 and prized for the darker, richer style its sherry casks delivered. The name comes from a local legend: the devil is said to have escaped Bowmore’s round church by hiding in a whisky cask.
The first release is a 10-year-old matured in first-fill Oloroso casks and finished in Pedro Ximénez, at 56.6%, priced at £70. The second is a never-before-seen 22-year-old, drawn from two casks held back from the original editions and matured for another decade, bottled at 59.6% and priced at £380.
Both are global exclusives of The Whisky Shop: the 10-year-old arrives on 16 October, while the 22-year-old is sold by ballot from 31 October. Bowmore says it will revive other editions from its archive too.
