Liberia’s Agriculture Commodity Regulatory Authority (LACRA) launched a nationwide campaign on July 28, 2026, in the city of Gbarnga, distributing roughly 700,000 Liberica coffee seedlings to farmers across five counties. The initiative is part of a broader government plan to plant more than five million Liberica coffee trees by 2030 and restore Liberia’s place among the world’s major coffee producers — a status the country once held before its coffee sector declined. The project has technical backing from the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA) and aims both to boost local farmers’ incomes and to promote Liberica — a much rarer variety than Arabica or Robusta — on international markets.
