Nespresso confirmed at the end of September that it is ending production of its compostable paper capsules and will now focus exclusively on aluminium capsules. The paper capsules were announced in November 2022, reached stores in 2023, starting in France and Switzerland, and were later extended to 14 European markets, working with Nespresso Original machines.
Developed with Huhtamaki and Nestlé’s packaging research centre, they were made mainly from moulded paper pulp with a thin biodegradable lining against oxidation, and were certified by TÜV Austria for home composting.
The company cites consumer feedback about limited shelf life and the overall experience, arguing that aluminium best preserves the taste and aroma of the coffee. Aluminium can be recycled effectively, but only through dedicated collection systems, and low participation rates remain the main obstacle.
